Arctic Tern: A pearl of an Island

Posted 37 minutes ago by Sail Blogs

Christopher Columbus saw natives wearing pearls and found the source to be the pearl beds off of Isla Cubagua. In 1492 fifty fortune hunters arrived and founded the settlement of Nueva Cadiz. They took the Indians as slaves to dive for pearls. In 1450 a force of well armed Indians attacked the town and forces the Spaniards to leave. The Spanish returned and reinforced the town and continued to enslave the Indians for pearls. Cubagua pearls provided Spain with a wealth almost equal to that of the gold transported from the Inca lands. In one year 820 pounds of pearls were exported from Cubagua. After a few decades the pearl resource declined and other nearby islands were exploited. Pearl fishing has been prohibited since 1962. more »

Sailing Pause: Bermuda to Europe Day 16

Posted 37 minutes ago by Sail Blogs

A very very frustrating day of alternately sailing in fantastic conditions and then being forced to motor as the winds die and swing around against us. Net / net it turned out to be the worst days run at 108nm. Right now we are motorsailing at just under 5 knots, the wind after being dead on the nose for most of the morning has finally backed to NE and is allowing us to, at least, head directly toward out destination. The nights are getting markedly colder as we head north and the water temperature is dropping steadily every day as well. The water in Bermuda was a balmy 26.5 degrees centigrade, but now its dropped to just over 20 degrees today. Even during the day its pretty cold on deck unless you are sitting in the sun and out of the wind. I expect it will continue to get cooler as we approach the mainland with the cold air flowing from the north and a cold south running current close in to the Portugese coast. more »

Christian Allaire's Sailing Life: Tropical Storm Bertha Update

Posted 37 minutes ago by Sail Blogs

Yesterday the predicted track of Bertha was becoming uncomfortably close to Puerto Rico. But today's track has pushed the track further north and west. Yesterday afternoon I pulled out of the slip at the marina and sank my new anchor into the Salinas harbor mud to pre-stage myself in case a rapid move to the mangroves was in order. While this may not be necessary in terms of Bertha, I had plans on heading to the Jobos hurricane holes, about 5 miles away this week anyway. Just south of the Salinas harbor sits a series of "cayos" that have clear water and great swimming and snorkeling. So I plan on anchoring in the neighborhood to more easily clean the bottom of Christa, which by the way is a constant battle. I then plan to head into the mangroves and do a full hurricane prep dry run to ensure I have a handle on the scope of the job. more »

Lemon's Way - Giving up the good in search of the great: A Change In Plans

Posted 37 minutes ago by Sail Blogs

If I haven't mentioned it in the blog, I got called back to Tucson for some court hearings in mid July. I scheduled flights departing and returning to Norfolk, VA figuring I would have plenty of time to sail there, board the dogs, and find dockage for a week. Well that plan is changing. I'm ready to depart, but thunderstorms are predicted for the next several days and I just don't think it is a good idea to slog my way through them while rushing to Norfolk. Rushing on a sailboat is generally bad and ruins everything. I've been stressing about it and trying to find flights out of another city closer by. No luck. Then it dawned on me. Norfolk is 4 days away by sailboat, but only 4 hours away by car. I think I can get the dogs boarded here in Oriental a lot easier than in Norfolk (I've been trying to find a good place in Norfolk for days without success). I know I can find dock space easily in Oriental. And I have a motorhome that can do the 4 hour trip easily and provide me a place to base out of in Norfolk. So I'm keeping my travel plans and flights already reserved and purchased but delaying the sail north until the situation is less rushed and the weather is more stable. This will give me another several days in Oriental to finalize things on the boat, work on the computer, and relax before the weeklong trip back west. Then I'll fly back into Norfolk, drive back to Oriental, pick up the dogs, re-store the motorhome in my already paid for spot, pick up the boat, provision as needed, and head off at a proper pace. This plan is subject to change but I'll keep posting as long as I have internet. more »

SV Delos: Day 18- 110 miles and counting.

Posted 37 minutes ago by Sail Blogs

110 miles to go until land fall! We're estimating 3PM tomorrow to reach the straits. The winds were light and their direction unfavorable so we started motoring at about 6AM and continued through most of the day until about 5:30 when the wind finally shifted and came up. Motoring wasn't unwelcome today. Except for the noise the boat is upright so walking around is easier. Also, now that we're further north it's getting cold enough to want a heater. The main diesel heater has some issues so we can't use that, however there is an auxiliary heater run off the engine heat (just like a car) that works great. more »
